Small Texan Triathlon 2014 Race Report

Small Texan Triathlon 2014 Report
Boerne City Lake, Boerne, TX
Swim - .93 / Bike - 28 miles / Run - 6.2 miles
Start time 8:05

Overall time 4:12:46 (last year 4:13:20)

Pre-Race
For the 1st time ever Rob is not here for my race, he is back in MD for work so I was going solo.  I also had to put Lane in boarding since I had to get up early on Sunday and didn't want to leave her locked in the house for that long.  I was a bit disappointed to hear that the race was starting at 8 again this year, I wish they would start a bit earlier, possibly 730.

I arrived around 7 and had plenty of time to find a decent spot and get setup with time to spare.  Standing around, I chatted with a few people but I was missing Rob and his reminders.

Weather
It started off great, very overcast and the water was very cool from the recent rain.  But it quickly got warm and the sun was hot!

Swim

After the leg cramp at Gatorbait I was a bit worried but the start for this race is different, you are actually in the water and wading around so I think this is a more comfortable start for me.  My watch said I swam just over a mile so clearly my sighting still needs improvement.  The women / relay group was very small so some bumping in the beginning but after that I felt like I had the entire lake to myself.  I was able to swim freestyle the entire way and felt good.

My swim was almost 6 minutes slower than last year - this could be because I swam slower or because I added a bit more distance because of my poor sighting.  I'm still happy.

Unlike Gatorbait I came out of the water with a smile and think I even mumbled to myself that Rob was not there to see it.

Bike

I still feel this is the strongest part of race and of course my favorite, I love being on my bike, it will be hard to some day realize that I need to upgrade.  She treated me well, no flat tires.  The road is still bumpy but the hills didn't seem as bad as last year, guess that is a sign I'm getting stronger?  I was almost 9 minutes faster than last year.  I felt that I utilized my gears well but still need to focus on climbing.

Towards the end of the bike my back was getting a bit tight, I needed to stand up a few times to stretch it out.

Run

My run was actually slower than last year - sigh!  Again this year the heat got to me, no excuses just a fact.  I continue to struggle off the bike and I think I'm going to try to use my compression leg sleeves to see if that helps a bit.  I have worn them during training and my legs do feel better.

I actually thought I was bonking yesterday because I was getting chills and a bit dizzy.  I'm going to reach out to Coach Krista for some advice.  I'm confident that my nutrition is not very good and that might have something to do with it.

Overall

I was worried how I would do since Rob was not around.  He always keeps me focused and calm before the race and I can always hear him when I'm near transition.  Before and after the race is when I missed having him there but  I realized that during the race I'm only focused on what I'm doing.

Immediately after the race I was feeling spent, I worked my way back to the truck and got my gear put away and had some water and gatorade and started to feel better - had to be the sugar.  By the time I got on the road and listening to some good music with the adrenaline flowing I was feeling great.  I know this feeling, racing high, you feel like you can accomplish anything and I was ready to race again because my mind had forgotten about the heat and fatigue.

But this morning I'm still feeling good - I'm a bit sore - especially my poor feet but overall not to shabby.

Next up is my first 1/2 Ironman......the runs scares the s**t out of me.  Lets hope for cooler weather in September!  Back on track with training tomorrow!

As always I appreciate everyone that follows my blog or sends me supporting texts, emails, FB updates!

A week of crazy but still good miles

Week of 8/27/2012 - 9/2/20212 Exercise Walking - 0 General Walking - 27.95 miles Stationary Bike - 0 Weight loss - ?? I was a bit shocked that when I was finally able to look at my miles that I actually had 27.95 miles.  That is not a great week but considering that since Tuesday, August 28th we have been staying in a hotel and were driving from Maryland to Texas from August 29th - September 1st, I'm pretty happy with that. As I wrote in the last update, I knew it would be tough to get some exercise in last week and it was.  I decided that this was an adventure and a great opportunity to spend time with the hubby and I was going to enjoy our trip and worry about diet and exercise when we got to Texas and got settled in. The only bad thing that happened on our trip is that my fitbit , may be on its last leg.  I dropped the fitbit early last week and cracked the case and when I say cracked I can see the inside of the device.  Then towards the...

Race schedule set

Week of 12/31/2012 - 1/6/2013 Swimming - 2 Biking - 0 Running -2 Strength Training - 1 Weight loss for week - 0 Total weight loss - 27.5 As reported in the last post the past couple of weeks haven't been great workout weeks and no weight loss. But it happens right, no worries.  I'll get it back on track this week.  My back is feeling MUCH better so I'm going to do some strength training tomorrow and clearly I need to get back to biking.  My road bike is set up on the trainer between the living room and kitchen I just need to spend some time on it.  I've been very focused on swimming and running but need to make sure that I'm giving proper attention to the bike.  Plus with my back being sore I didn't want to make even more sore by getting on the bike. Along with this post you will see I have updated my race schedule.  Races fill up quick around here so I built in a back up race in case one of the races is full.  I've also been working on my 2...

Week 6 - thoughts of quitting

1/4/16 - 1/10/16 Swim - 2 Bike - 0 Run - 2 Strength Training - 0 Weight to lose - 22 lbs Mileage (weekly / 2016)   Swim - 3600 yds / 3600 yds miles      Bike - 0 miles / 0 miles   Run -8.21 miles / 8.21 mile s I don't have to clock in at work but this week I tracked my work hours and I worked roughly 68 hours. Today is the only day I have not worked.....yet (my on call coverage doesn't end till 5). I know plenty of people work as many if not more, but it's been rough on me when I'm getting up at 3:45 to get to the gym and still trying to spend time with my hubby and baby girl (our wonderful doggie).  I have been questioning my ability to juggle this job with m training schedule but this week has been the worst....I actually told myself I wanted to quit. Because I have a great hubby, who wants me to succeed in achieving my goals he listened to me cry and vent, he has been listening to me for awhile and as usual he continues to motivate m...
